Activity 5.1 The sock store

Learning objective: Counting in 2s and odd and even numbers.

Resources: Washing line; 5 pairs of plain socks; 5 pairs of patterned socks; clothes pegs; Numicon®; individual number lines (1 per child); 5 pegs per child.

How to begin: The shop assistant in the sock store likes to display the socks in a repeating pattern. Peg socks on to the washing line (one peg per sock) in a repeating pattern such as plain, plain, patterned, patterned, etc. Ask the children to discuss and identify the repeating pattern and encourage them to clap the observed pattern. Explain that the assistant needs to find out how many pegs she will need to peg out 5 pairs of socks. Ask the children how many pegs have been used so far and encourage them to count in twos.

Development: Ask the children to put a peg by each even number on their number line as they count 0, 2, 4, 6, and so on. Encourage them to discuss what they notice about the position on the number line and draw their attention to the odd, even, odd, even pattern that emerges.

Key vocabulary: Number names; how many; odd; even; pairs; before; after; next; in between.

Simplification: Encourage the children to construct a simple, repeating pattern, naming the criteria and clapping the pattern.

Extension: Ask the children to continue the pattern beyond 10 and to predict what would emerge.
